Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced Thursday that the United Hockey League club has signed rookie center Yannick Tifu (T-fu) for the 2005-06 season. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Tifu will make his professional debut with the IceHogs in 05-06 after spending the past four seasons with the Rouyn Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During the past three campaigns, Tifu has scored 223 points in 210 games, including 91 goals.

"This is the type of player that can step in and be one of the team's top scorers right out of juniors," said Martinson. "Obviously his stats speak for themselves, as he was at or near the top in scoring on his team each of the past three seasons. We expect him to be one of the top scoring rookies in the league."

Tifu's junior point totals rival that of current IceHogs center Olivier Proulx, who scored 407 points in 335 QMJHL games. Proulx later went on to lead the Dayton Bombers (ECHL) in scoring during his rookie season in 2003-04. The high-scoring centerman recorded a career high 42 tallies during the 03-04 season, leading the Huskies in that category as well as points when he contributed 90. Last season the Greenfield Park, Quebec native notched 28g-54a-82pts.

The 5-11, 185lb center also has postseason success, helping lead the Huskies into the second round of the post-season each of the past two seasons. During Rouyn Noranda's last two playoff runs, Tifu netted 9g-7a-16pts in 21 contests.

With Tifu signed, Rockford now has 17 skaters set for training camp in October. Others on the Hogs roster include forwards Robin Big Snake, Chaz Johnson, Alex Kim, Vince Malts, Preston Mizzi, Jason Notermann, Olivier Proulx, Jason Ralph, Bruce Watson and Chad Woollard, defensemen Ryan Carrigan, Matt Gens, Corey Hessler, Nathan Lutz and Steve Pelletier, and goaltender Ronnie Vogel.
