Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD -- Garrett Olson (1-0), just four months removed from pitching in college at Cal Poly, tossed 7.0 two-hit shut-out innings, striking out six, as the Frederick Keys defeated the Kinston Indians to take a 2-0 advantage in the Carolina League Championship Series.

Olson, the Orioles 1st round sandwich pick (41st overall) in the 2005 MLB First Year Player Draft, earned his first Carolina League victory, and Jeff Fiorentino went 4-for-5 with a solo home run to lead the Keys' offense.

After four and a half innings of a pitchers duel, that saw Olson and Indians starter Aaron Laffey hold the opposition scoreless, the Keys scored a run, when Travis Brown's squeeze bunt scored Bryan Bass, giving the Keys a 1-0 edge.

The Keys opened up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Nolan Reimold and Branden Florence hit back-to-back singles to set the table for Dustin Yount's RBI single. Later in the sixth inning Brian Bock tripled down the right field line to drive in two. Bock scored on the next play when Travis Brown reached on a fielding error by Kevin Kouzmanoff, to give the Keys a commanding, 6-2 lead.

Fiorentino added a homer off Jim Ed Warden, his first of the playoffs, to give the Keys a 6-0 lead.

Kevin Kouzmanoff would ruin the Keys shut out with a two-run home run off David Haehnel in the top of the ninth inning, but that would be all the offense the Indians could manage.

Laffey (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings.

The Keys will travel to Kinston for Game Three of the Championship Series, beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Monday. With a 2-0 lead the Keys can clinch their first Carolina League Championship since 1990 with a victory. LHP Adam Loewen will take the hill for the Keys against RHP Sean Smith.
