Opportunistic Cubs Pound Z's to Stop Skid

Iowa Cubs News Release

New Orleans, LA - The Iowa Cubs (58-54) turned four New Orleans Zephyrs (56-55) errors into eight unearned runs, and LH Eric Jokisch tossed a complete game shutout in the club's 9-0 win in game one of a double-header on Tuesday night at Zephyr Field. The Cubs ended a season-high six-game losing streak and evened the five-game series at a game apiece. The I-Cubs recorded their 10th shutout of the season, which ties them with Nashville for the PCL lead.

The Cubs got on the board in the second inning off LH Brian Flynn. Kris Bryant got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and came around to score on a ringing double off the center field wall by Mike Olt. Since re-joining the I-Cubs on July 24, Olt has hit .345 (10-for-29) with four doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored in seven games.

Iowa added on to its lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of throwing errors from Flynn that led to four of the unearned runs. Flynn tried to pick off Matt Szczur at first base with two outs, but threw the ball away allowing the runner to get to third base. Szczur would score after Flynn couldn't handle a bouncer back to the mound off the bat of Javy Baez. Bryant followed by smoking a run-scoring double to left field, and Jorge Soler launched the next pitch over the wall in left field to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead. Soler has a double, two homers, three RBI, and three walks in seven games since being promoted to triple-A.

The Cubs scored four more unearned tallies in the fourth inning. Zephyrs 2B Josh Rodriguez booted a ball in his direction to start the inning, which resulted in four two-out runs. Chris Valaika had an RBI single to plate Eli Whiteside from second base to produce the first run of the frame. Baez followed by blasting a towering three-run homer to right field that gave the Cubs a 9-0 lead. He has a team-high 20 homers and 76 RBI. Baez has hit a monthly-best .284 (29-for-102) in July, while his nine home runs and 30 RBI are the most he's had in any month this season.

Jokisch retired the final 13 hitters he faced in picking up his second complete game shutout of his career. He allowed three singles and struck out six to win his seventh game of the season. The southpaw has won back-to-back for the first time since winning a season-high three in a row from May 21-June 1. Jokisch leads the league with 130.1 innings pitched on the season. He has worked at least six innings in 16 of his team-high 21 starts.

Flynn allowed nine runs in 3.2 innings, but just one was earned in taking his eighth loss of the season for the Zephyrs. Since picking up his seventh win on June 21, Flynn has gone 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA (16ER/26IP) over his last five starts. The loss was his first in five career starts against the I-Cubs.
