Kane County Cougars News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- The Kane County Cougars (7-10) took two games from the Cedar Rapids Kernels (11-6) in one day as they swept a double header at Veterans Memorial Stadium 6-1 and 2-1. For the first time this season, the Cougars have a chance to sweep a series.

After winning the first game, the Cougars didn't score until the fourth inning of the second contest. With two outs Marty Herum took advantage of a walk to Grant Heyman and a hit by pitch to Steve McQuail by doubling home both base runners.

Jared Miller (2-1) kept the Kernels scoreless until a dramatic sixth. Miller gave up a one-out double to Nick Gordon and was pulled for right-hander Nick Baker. A wild pitch by the Cougar reliever allowed Gordon to score, cutting the lead 2-1. After a Trey Vavra double, Cougar manager Mark Grudzielanek went with his third pitcher of the inning in Zac Curtis. Curtis struck out his only batter in the sixth and tossed a perfect seventh for his second save of the year. Baker recorded his second hold.

Felix Jorge (1-1) suffered the loss despite a quality start of six innings only allowing two runs.

Clutch offense and Brent Jones' (1-2) outing helped the Cougars to their first win against the Kernels this season.

After Cedar Rapids scored their only run against Jones to tie the game in the bottom of the third, the Cougars piled up three runs in the fourth against Kernels starter Michael Cederoth (0-2). Cody Regis retook the Cougars' lead scoring on Jose Queliz's RBI groundout, before Victor Reyes tripled home Fernery Ozuna. Colin Bray punched in another run with a base hit.

Two innings later, the Cougars took advantage a pair of two-out walks from Cedar Rapids reliever Sam Clay. After free passes to Stryker Trahan and Regis, Ozuna lifted a two-run triple into right field for a 6-1 Cougars' lead.

Jones picked up his first win of the season with six innings of one-run baseball. Mason McCullough tossed a scoreless seventh to seal the victory.

The series between the Cougars and Kernels will wrap up on Sunday. The Kernels will have rehabbing Minnesota Twins pitcher Ricky Nolasco throwing against the Cougars' offense. Jeferson Mejia (0-1, 5.14) will throw for the Cougars. First pitch from Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Coverage on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com begins at 1:50 p.m.
