Lowell Spinners News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - Facing adversity for the first time in the 2015 season, the Lowell Spinners showed mettle. After the Vermont Lake Monsters scored four in the ninth to send the game to extras, Luis Alexander Basabe hit his second home run of the game to give the Spinners a 7-6 lead that would hold for a final on a dreary Tuesday night at Centennial Field.

The Lake Monsters jumped out to an early lead, getting to Danny Rosenbaum for a run in the first. Steven Pallares led off the game with a single. After back-to-back strikeouts, Pallares stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Chris Iriart to give Vermont the early 1-0 lead.

Lowell (10-2) took the lead in the third after two fruitless innings against Vermont starter Kyle Friedrichs. Chad De La Guerra led off the inning with a single and a one-out single by Brandon Magee put two on. Basabe gave the Spinners the lead, taking a 2-2 offering over the left-centerfield wall for his first home run of the season and a 3-1 Lowell lead.

The Spinners would extend the lead in the fourth when De La Guerra hit his first professional home run, a two-run shot, to give the Spinners a 5-1 lead.

The two teams would trade runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth with De La Guerra plating the Spinners sixth run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

Vermont (4-7) pulled even in the ninth with a four run explosion. A Ryan Howell two-run home run pulled Vermont within a pair. After a double, Edwar Garcia came in to try and close out the win. After a walk and a run-scoring groundout brought the Lake Monsters within a run, it appeared Garcia closed out the win with an infield pop, but when no one took charge it fell, scoring Pallares from second to send the game into extra innings.

If not for Basabe's power display, De La Guerra would have been the offensive star, going 2-for-3 with his first home run and three RBI. Over his last four games, De La Guerra is now 7-for-14 with a home run, five doubles and five RBI. Basabe, who homered from both sides of the plate, drove in four, while the Spinners also received yet another multi-hit game from Victor Acosta, who now has hits in all eight games this season, batting .452 overall.

Danny Rosenbaum bounced back in his third rehab start for the Spinners allowing just two runs, one earned, over five innings. He struck out four. Brandon Show was phenomenal with three shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair. Making his professional debut, Zandona retired just one batter, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits. Garcia (1-0, 0.00) was charged with a blown save, but picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning, striking out four.

The Spinners now head to Connecticut for the first of a 1-1-1 three-game set. Daniel Gonzalez (2-0, 1.80) will make his first start of the season with a 7pm first pitch.
