Vermont Grabs 5-2 Win In 13 Innings At Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, MD --- Steven Pallares led off the 13th inning with his fourth hit of the game and scored on a Trace Loehr one-out RBI single as the Vermont Lake Monsters plated three runs in the 13th for a 5-2 extra-inning win over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Ripken Stadium.

Pallares led off the game with a double before adding singles in the third, 10th and 13th innings for Vermont's first four-hit game of the season and just the second over the last two years (John Nogowski 4-hit game on July 21, 2014). After his leadoff single in the 13th, Pallares advanced to second on a Richie Martin sacrifice bunt and then scored the go ahead run when Loehr grounded his first hit in six at bats to left.

Seth Brown followed with an RBI double down the leftfield line to plate Loeh for a 4-2 lead. The double was the 18th of the season for Brown, moving into a five-way tie for fourth-most ever by a Vermont player and the most doubles since David Freitas had 19 in 2010. Brown then scored the third run of the inning as Brett Siddall picked up his third hit of the game with a two-out RBI single to right.

Vermont had taken a 2-0 lead in the game on a Skye Bolt RBI single in the fourth and a Tom Gavitt RBI double in the seventh to score Bolt, who had picked up his second triple of the season with two outs in the inning. The Lake Monsters got three scoreless innings on three hits from starter Chris Kohler, while reliever Evan Manarino retired all nine Ironbirds he faced in the middle three innings.

Aberdeen tied the game in the seventh off Heath Bowers with a pair of unearned runs on a Drew Turbin two-out, two-run double after the runners had reached base on a strikeout wild pitch and a fielding error. Bowers rebounded with two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth before Andrew Tomasovich tossed two scoreless frames on one hit. James Naile (3-0) retired all six Ironbirds he faced with two strikeouts over the final two innings for the win.

The five Vermont pitchers combined to allow two runs on six hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts over the 13 innings. Andrew Elliott (0-1) allowed the three runs and four hits in the 13th inning to take the loss for Aberdeen (35-34), while Ricardo Andujar had two of the Ironbirds six hits.

Vermont (29-36), which has won three of its last five games and finished with a 13-15 record in August, will wrap up the three-game series at Aberdeen on Tuesday. The Lake Monsters then return to historic Centennial Field for their final four home games of the season, beginning with a doubleheader against the Hudson Valley Renegades on Wednesday starting at 7:05 pm.
